On September 6, the State Theatre in Austin came alive with an evening of theatre, memories, and powerful storytelling as HC4A presented Jaane Pehchaane Anjaane, starring Anupam Kher and Swaroop Sampat. The much-anticipated production brought audiences together for an intimate and thought-provoking theatrical experience, leaving a lasting impression long after the curtains closed.
Among those moved by the evening was Binny Nanavati, whose review captures the essence of the experience, the performances, and the emotions that made the night truly memorable.
Sujal and I watched Jaane Pehchaane Anjaane last night at the State Theatre in downtown Austin, and I’m still reflecting on it.
Written and directed by Gajendra Ahire, the play explores three generations: retired elders, middle-aged adults, and Gen Z, each navigating the changing dynamics of the people around them.
Central theme: Jaane Pehchaane (familiar), yet somehow Anjaane (unknown).
As life transforms us, how we interpret relationships, what we leave unsaid, and what commitment means never stays fixed. The story feels so universal that it could belong to any family, in any culture.
A few things stood out:
– Live performance demands absolute presence. Watching Anupam Kher move seamlessly between narrator and lead was a masterclass in craft, capturing how loneliness feels at different stages of life.
– Swaroop Rawal brings genuine grace to the stage. The easy dynamic between the leads made their connection completely believable.
– Anu Malik’s music quietly set the mood without taking attention away from the story.
As Anupam Kher noted during the show, watching someone else’s life on stage often brings us back to our own truer selves.
Maybe that’s the real takeaway.
The play returns again and again to the image of a bell without its ring. That image stayed with me. A life without warmth, dignity, and companionship can feel much the same. The human heart never stops seeking them.
It’s a production that stays with you long after the curtain falls.
Thank you to HC4A for bringing this unforgettable performance to Austin! ❤️
