At Hindu Charities for America (HC4A), we believe education is the ultimate bridge over income disparity. This summer, in partnership with Austin Community College’s Upward Bound program, we concluded a high-impact, 5-session hybrid AI & Career Lab. Over five sessions, 25 brilliant, first-generation high school scholars from Austin and Pflugerville ISDs moved from passive consumers of technology to active, ethical tech creators.
For these Title I scholars, technical literacy is no longer just an advantage—it is an absolute necessity for economic mobility in a rapidly changing world.
The 5-Day Journey: Shifting from Users to Creators
As artificial intelligence rapidly reshapes our world, our curriculum was built around a rigorous, practical framework of digital fluency. Rather than treating AI as a shortcut, scholars learned to engage with technology as an active collaborator.
Over the 5-session series, students worked to:
- Deconstruct how AI works: Moving past the mystique to understand pattern-matching systems.
- Direct AI with high intention: Crafting structured, Socratic prompts to enhance personal study habits.
- Audit machine outputs: Evaluating responses for logical errors, bias, and system hallucinations.
- Design real-world solutions: Translating neighborhood observation into practical digital concepts.
Empowering Leaders: The Director's Corner
Our program directly addressed academic integrity, training students to turn generative tools into strict study tutors rather than copy-paste shortcuts.

Civic Prototyping: Student App Showcase
During our “AI for Good” design challenge, students elevated their cumulative learning into practical community solutions, building user-centric layouts and logical frameworks to address vulnerabilities in their neighborhoods.
The creativity of our scholars blew us away. One of our standout female scholars designed a custom mobile application prototype dedicated to educating and supporting young girls navigating their first few years of experiencing periods. By combining compassionate health literacy with clean, intuitive layout designs, her prototype proved that the ultimate technical differentiator is human empathy.
Navigating the Texas Tech Economy
We aligned our technical tracks with modern workforce data. While approximately $52\%$ of college graduates find themselves underemployed one year after graduation, 7 out of 10 modern employers are actively switching to skills-based hiring over traditional degrees.
Our program introduced students to high-demand Google Career Certificate tracks (Data, Cybersecurity, UX, and AI Essentials) which translate directly to regional opportunities, college transfer credits, and recruitment networks.
It Takes a Dedicated Village
This milestone progression from virtual sessions to a high-touch hybrid lab was made possible by an incredible team of technical mentors, developers, and guest speakers:
- Gulshan Singh: For her masterly design and delivery of this hybridized "human friction" curriculum, guiding students to find original voice.
- Dr. Adil Dalal: For delivering an inspiring keynote on leadership, brain science, and focus, sharing actionable techniques to help students conquer distraction and stress.
- Shankar Hariharan: For coming in to inspire our students with real-world applications of AI in modern technical career trajectories.
- Yannik Baurle: (Shankar's data science mentee) For showcasing his custom internal analytics dashboard built for our website during his summer research internship.
- Prashant Sheth: For mentoring students through app ideation, civic logic design, and strategic brainstorming.
Finally, we extend our deepest gratitude to the City of Austin and the GTOPS capacity program for their unwavering support in funding the digital inclusion frameworks that make these life-changing pathways possible.
